When we first got out to this property in Dickson, the problem was obvious: water had been running down the hill for a long time, and it finally started washing everything out. The ground was cut up, the ditch line wasn’t holding, and the driveway was next in line to take damage.

The issue wasn’t just surface level. Once we started looking closer, we hit solid rock. That had to go before anything else could be fixed.

Why We Had to Start With Rock

You can’t control water if you can’t get below it. In this case, the rock layer was stopping us from cutting a proper ditch. Water was staying high, spreading out, and picking up speed as it moved downhill.

That leads to:

  • Washed out soil after heavy rain
  • Unstable ground near the driveway
  • Ongoing erosion that keeps getting worse

If we skipped this step and tried to work around it, the problem would come right back.

Breaking It Out

We brought in the hammer and started breaking it up. This part takes time. You’re not just knocking rock loose, you’re shaping the path where water is going to run.

As the rock came out:

  • We cleared the larger pieces out of the way
  • Started forming a clean ditch line
  • Set the grade so water would move where we want it

Once that rock was gone, everything opened up. Now we had room to actually build something that works.

Why This Step Matters

A lot of drainage jobs fail because this part gets rushed. If the base isn’t right, it doesn’t matter what you put on top of it. Water will find a way around it.

Taking the time to break through rock and set the grade correctly is what makes the rest of the system hold up long term.

What Comes Next

With the rock cleared, we’re ready for the next phase. We’ll dig the full ditch line and install a pipe to carry water away from the problem area instead of letting it wash everything out.
